It had that weird new bamboo board/utensil smell and was covered with fine shards (for lack of a better term) of bamboo. I rubbed the surface with a scrubbie sponge, which quickly removed the bristly bits, gave it a good wash, and proceeded to use it. I'm very pleased I kept it. It washes up beautifully, and being able to put it into the dish machine means that 1) it can be sanitized and 2) it doesn't retain odors. I have no problem cutting fruit and vegetables and there is no transfer of taste or smell. I try to remember to rub it lightly with mineral oil maybe once a week (and I buy generic store-brand oil) but even when I haven't it still comes up trumps. It still looks beautiful, it's easy to clean, and it doesn't mess up my knives. I only put it in the dishwasher occasionally (if I use it to cut meat) as the dishwasher does dry it out a bit. It is lightweight, but not at all fragile. The bamboo is much better than regular cutting boards, and I love that they are a quickly renewable resource. The bamboo doesn't seem to soak up liquid the way regular cutting boards do, and it looks a lot better. I love chopping on these bamboo cutting boards. They don't get splits from my knives, and the surface is much more dense and less porous! Everyone who has seen them in my kitchen loves the way they look and asks where I got them. The only thing I would say about this, is pay attention to the measurements of this one, as it is definitely smaller than my other board. |
